FUEN

The Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN) is the largest umbrella organisation and main advocate of Europe’s autochthonous national minorities, nationalities and language groups.

Under its umbrella it currently unites more than 100 member organisations from 35 European countries. FUEN works for the preservation and promotion of the identity, language, culture, rights and traditions of the European minorities. FUEN is the voice of the minorities at the international organisations, the European Union, the Council of Europe, the United Nations and the OSCE.

Today YEN is an ordinary member of FUEN, with one specificity. The president of YEN always has a seat in the presidium of FUEN secured in their statues. The Presidium is otherwise formed by the President and six Vice Presidents who are elected by the Assembly of Delegates of FUEN every three years. Since the 2016 FUEN Congress in Breslau/Wroclaw (Poland) the Presidium is led by Loránt Vincze, member of the Hungarian community in Romania. During the FUEN Congress in Bratislava/Pressburg he was elected for a second term.

But YEN and FUEN have a long history together. During FUEN meeting in Aosta in 1963 the first Youth Committee was set up. Later in 1984 the Youth Committee of FUEN was dissolved and the “Youth of European Nationalities” (YEN) was founded as an independent organisation on the Knivsberg in Northern Schleswig / Denmark.

The common goals of FUEN and YEN still connect both organisations. Moreover, both organizations have been partners in different EU projects. For example, from January 2009 till December 2011 we cooperated within the Network for multilingualism and linguistic diversity in Europe (RML2future), funded by the European Commission. Also, in the follow-up project under the direction of FUEN – www.language-diversity.eu – YEN was a strong partner.

In 2013 FUEN has launched the Minority SafePack European Citizens’ Initiative to promote minority rights, and linguistic and cultural diversity in Europe, for which YEN has been a steady partner in raising awareness and collecting signatures.

FUEN is the organiser of the EUROPEADA – the Football Tournament of the autochthonous, national minorities in Europe taking place every four years. As an organisation that represents a variety of minorities YEN cannot participate with a team of its own, but has been present at this event with a variety of activities.

European Youth Forum (YFJ)

The European Youth Forum (YFJ) is an independent, democratic, youth-led platform, representing over 100 National Youth Councils and International Youth Organisations from across Europe.

The Youth Forum works to empower young people to participate actively in society to improve their own lives by representing and advocating their needs and interests and those of their organisations. In the current uncertain political and social context that affects young people, they can be powerful catalysts for positive change and contributors of innovative solutions to Europe’s challenges.

European Youth Forum makes advocacy work to become an agenda-setter on youth affairs, empower its Member Organisations to maximise the impact of their expertise and enforce a rights-based approach in all that we do. YFJ has three main goals: greater youth participation, stronger youth organisations, increased youth autonomy and inclusion.

YEN has been a full member of the European Youth Forum (YFJ) since April 2010.

What YEN is doing at the YFJ:

A representative of YEN is regularly participating in the events of the YFJ to advocate for minority issues, social inclusion and diversity.

In 2017 the Council of Members (CoMem) of the European Youth Forum adopted a Motion in support of the European Citizens’ Initiative: Minority SafePack – one million signatures for diversity in Europe

Advisory Council on Youth

The Advisory Council on Youth a non-governmental partner within the structures of the Council of Europe. It is made up of 30 representatives from youth NGOs and networks in Europe.

It is a crucial part of the unique co-management structure, where these young Europeans together with the representatives of Youth ministries from the 50 States Parties to the European Cultural Convention, equally decide on the standards and work priorities of the Council of Europe’s youth sector in the Joint Council on Youth (CMJ).

It is a living example of participatory democracy, which establishes the standards and work priorities of the Council of Europe’s youth sector and makes recommendations for future priorities, programmes and budgets.

The main task of the Advisory Council is to advise the Committee of Ministers on all questions relating to youth. Specifically, the Advisory Council helps to ensure youth policies are mainstreamed into the Council of Europe’s programme of activities by providing opinions and proposals to all of the Organisation’s bodies. It also ensures that young people are involved in other activities of the Council of Europe and promotes the policies beyond the Organisation.

The Advisory Council on Youth promotes the co-management system in decision-making processes at all levels as a good practice for youth participation, democracy and inclusion, whilst preparing and encouraging young generations to take responsibility to build their desired society.

The Members of the Advisory Council on Youth are elected by the Council of Members (CoMem) of the European Youth Forum for a term of 2 years. Since May 2015 YEN has been represented in the Advisory Council on Youth.
